How to configure Zapier to record activity when you star items in Gmail

Zapier is a platform that allows you to automate workflows between different services. This post will show you how to use Zapier to send starred items in Gmail to Range via Range's Zapier App (currently beta).

Get started on Zapier

Assuming you already have a Zapier account, you can connect with Range using this link.

Configure the Action

Select "New Starred Email" as the Trigger and "Record Interaction" as the action, then follow the steps to configure your account and authentication for both Gmail and Range.

Customizing the Zap

You will then be asked to customize the interaction record.

As a baseline we offer the following steps, however you can get fancy and use Gmail's rfc822msgid search filter to make the link work for anyone on the thread.

Some key fields should plan to set:

  • ID = Select "ID" from the gmail dropdown
  • Name = Select "Subject" from the gmail dropdown
  • URL = Select "Message URL" from the gmail dropdown
  • Type = Choose OPENED
  • Provider = Type "Starred in Gmail"
  • Provider ID = Type "gmailzap"
  • User ID = Leave blank, activity will be added for API key owner.

Click "Continue", then "Test and Continue", then "Done Editing". And you're done!

Congrats!

Now, test the zap. If all went well you should see activity in your Range sidebar.

Note that Zapier will typically check for new emails every 15 minutes, so you won't see activity immediately.
